Petah Tikva (Hebrew: פתח תקווה [ˈpetaχ ˈtikva], lit. 'Opening of Hope'), also known as Em HaMoshavot (lit. 'Mother of the Moshavot'), is a city in the Central District of Israel, 10.6 km (6.6 mi) east of Tel Aviv. It was founded in 1878, mainly by Haredi Jews of the Old Yishuv, and became a permanent settlement in 1883 with the financial help of Baron Edmond de Rothschild. The name Aphek or Aphec refers to one of several locations mentioned in the Hebrew Bible as the scenes of a number of battles between the Israelites and the Arameans and Philistines: Most famously, a town near which one or more rulers of Damascus named Ben-hadad were defeated by the Israelites and in which the Damascene king and his surviving soldiers found a safe place of retreat (1 Kings 20:26–30; 2 Kings 13:17, 24–25). Just before his death, the prophet Elisha predicted: "The arrow of the Lord's deliverance and the arrow of deliverance from Syria; for you must strike the Syrians at Aphek till you have destroyed them (2 Kings 13:17). The Great Synagogue of Petah Tikva (Hebrew: בית הכנסת הגדול בפתח תקוה) is an Orthodox Jewish congregation and synagogue, located on Hovevei Zion Street, in the centre of Petah Tikva, in the Central District of Israel. Completed in 1900, the building was designed by Daniel HaCohen Lifshitz, and is one of the pioneering residents of the city, and was named Beit Yaacov Synagogue, in honour of James Mayer de Rothschild, the father of the Baron Edmond James de Rothschild.
