The Union Pacific Railroad's (UP) Hinkle Locomotive Service and Repair Facility is located within the railroad's yard at Hinkle, Umatilla County, Oregon, United States. The first locomotive shop and servicing facilities at Hinkle were constructed in 1951 as part of the general relocation of railroads and highways in north-central Oregon because of the construction of the McNary Dam on the Columbia River. Before 1951, the primary yard and locomotive facilities in the area were located at Rieth, Oregon, four miles west of Pendleton.

It was started in August 1912 as the Hermiston Dairy and Hog Show as a joint fair with Morrow County, a one-time-only affair since legislation in 1913 made it no longer possible to have a bi-county fair.

Cold Springs Dam is an earthen dam 7 miles (11 km) northeast of Hermiston and 3 miles (5 km) south of the Columbia River in Umatilla County, Oregon. The dam impounds the water of the Umatilla River to create Cold Springs Reservoir, a component of the Umatilla Basin Project of the United States Bureau of Reclamation. Dating from 1908, the first generation of the bureau's projects in the American west, the reservoir supplies irrigation water for local agriculture in this arid and seasonally-cold desert region.
