The town sits on the eastern shores of Lough Swilly, being 23 kilometres (14 mi) northwest of Derry and 43 kilometres (27 mi) north of Letterkenny. In the 2022 census, the population was 6,971, making it the second most populous town in County Donegal, after Letterkenny, and the largest in Inishowen.

Andrew Allen (c. 1987 – 9 February 2012) was an Irish murder victim. A native of Derry, Allen was one of over thirty natives of Derry who had been forced from their homes by the Irish republican vigilante group calling itself Republican Action Against Drugs, or RAAD (which in July 2012 merged into the New IRA). However while RAAD claimed responsibility for the murder, friends and family believe that another dissident organisation was involved and that the modus operandi and murder weapon was more likely linked to the Real IRA, which later joined RAAD in forming the New IRA. The Real IRA has been the subject of claims that MI5 involvement in a previous murder was covered up.

In 2000, the station was also assigned an All-weather lifeboat. The station currently operates a Shannon-class All-weather lifeboat 13-08 Derek Bullivant (ON 1315), on station since 2015, and a B-class (Atlantic 85) Inshore lifeboat, Minnie and Ernest George Barry (B-819), on station since 2007.
