As of the 2010 United States Census, the CDP's population was 8,493. Mystic Island is a large, mostly waterfront development originally planned as a resort community that started in the early 1960s as a waterfront community with vacation bungalows.

Tuckerton is a borough situated on the Jersey Shore, within Ocean County in the U.S. state of New Jersey. As of the 2020 United States census, the borough's population was 3,577, its highest decennial count ever and an increase of 230 (+6.9%) from the 3,347 recorded at the 2010 census, which in turn had reflected a decline of 170 (−4.8%) from the 3,517 counted in the 2000 census. Tuckerton was incorporated as a borough by an act of the New Jersey Legislature on February 18, 1901, from portions of Little Egg Harbor Township.

The Affair at Little Egg Harbor took place on October 15, 1778, in southern New Jersey during the American Revolutionary War. American Loyalists killed 45 Patriot men, bayonetting them as they slept. The massacre took place about one week after the Battle of Chestnut Neck, a British raid aimed at suppressing privateers who used the area as a base to harass and seize British ships and their cargoes.

The Jacques Cousteau National Estuarine Research Reserve, located in southeastern New Jersey, encompasses over 116,116 acres (nearly 470 km2) of terrestrial, wetland and aquatic habitats within the Mullica River-Great Bay Ecosystem. A wide range of habitats includes the pinelands, lowland swamps, freshwater marshes, salt and freshwater tidal marshes, barrier islands (sandy beaches and dune habitats), shallow bays and the coastal ocean. Little more than one percent of this reserve has been subject to human development.

It is commonly mistaken as part of Tuckerton Borough, which it borders. West Tuckerton is usually defined as Little Egg Harbor's "town center", but the boundaries extend all the way to the Bay and contains many subdivisions that are not normally considered part of West Tuckerton and usually mistaken to be part of neighboring Mystic Island.
