Gitega (French pronunciation: [ɡiteɡa]), formerly Kitega, is the political capital of Burundi. Located in the centre of the country, in the Burundian central plateau roughly 62 kilometres (39 mi) east of Bujumbura, the largest city and former political capital, Gitega is the country's fourth largest city and former royal capital of the Kingdom of Burundi until its abolition in 1966. In late December 2018, Burundian president Pierre Nkurunziza announced that he would follow on a 2007 promise to return Gitega its former political capital status, with Bujumbura remaining as economic capital and centre of commerce.

The power station was constructed between January 2020 and October 2021, by Gigawatt Global Coöperatief, the Netherlands-based multinational independent power producer (IPP), through its local subsidiary Gigawatt Global Burundi SA. The off-taker for this power station is Régie de production et distribution d’eau et d’électricité (REGIDESO), the Burundian electricity parastatal utility company. A 25-year power purchase agreement (PPA) governs the sale of electricity between Gigawatt Global Burundi SA and REGIDESO. The engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) contractor was Voltalia of France, which was also awarded the operations, management and maintenance contract.
